Argentina, Spain, and Poland are the three European countries with the most horses per capita. This has led to a tremendous rise in polo-playing horses in these regions. When you're watching a polo match, keep an eye out for that strange sight: a woman riding mounted on her horse, and then jumping off — all while wearing high heels — to score the winning goal. Horseback riding (or "equitainment") is a form of eco-friendly tourism that's currently very popular in France. The special attraction: the rider isn't old and fat, but young and sexy — and not only can she handle a horse like a pro, she can also make the beast perform all sorts of tricks. (Check out for an example.) Femmes-chevaux (French for "women-horses") are generally between 18 and 30 years old, and they ride around town on horseback between 5 pm and 11 pm. They dress in tight-fitting shorts or short skirts that show off their legs, high heels, large sunglasses, and plenty of glittering bling. The most famous Femme-chevaux in France is known as "Noëlle de la rive." She's a model, singer, and frequent performer at the Erotic Festival La Nuit des Fous (Folie Douce) in Paris. "Although many people might see it as nonsense, I actually believe we're moving towards a new form of equality," says Valérie de la Cour. "Women and men will be equal every day: in every area of life and intimacy. The idea [is] to provide [women] with their own means [of erotic expression], according to what best matches their identity. It's an opportunity for them to express themselves. This was due to several factors, including the huge popularity of westerns in France in the late 1960s and '70s, which led to equestrianism being seen as "cool," plus the launch of a successful television program called "Thé ou café" ("Tea or coffee") on France 2. For Valérie de la Cour's Equitainment photographs, she asked 11 beautiful but very different women to represent their relationship with horses.
